Princess Cruises is the owner of the British-registered cruise vessel, Diamond Princess. It first operated in March 2004. It is primarily used for cruises in Asia, Australia and the Northern and Southern Hemisphere summers. The ship is capable of carrying more than 2,500 passengers and is very popular among families and couples.

Infectious disease outbreak

One passenger contracted COVID-19, an incurable disease. This was the first cruise ship case of an infective disease. The infection spread to more than 700 crew members and passengers over the course of the month. This was the worst outbreak of its kind in China.

Collaboration between various stakeholders was key to the outbreak. The Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labour and Welfare and a quarantine support team worked together to contain the outbreak. The Japanese Red Cross Society and the Self-Defense Forces were also involved in the containment of the outbreak.

Lockdown

After two passengers contracted the deadly virus Covid-19, the Diamond Princess ship was placed in quarantine. Two passengers with pre-existing conditions were admitted to hospital on Tuesday, 11 February. Despite the quarantine, passengers continued to partake in ship activities such as quizzes and dances. Fortunately the virus has not spread throughout the ship.

Japan sent protective suits to protect public health officials aboard the Diamond Princess ship as a response to the incident. Japan believes that the virus was transmitted to the ship after January 20. The cruise company is investigating the possibility that the cause was a Hong Kong resident who boarded the vessel in Japan. He stayed onboard for five days before returning to Hong Kong. The virus was detected in the Hong Kong resident on February 1, and he will remain in quarantine for 14 days.

Medical resources

According to the Japanese Ministry of Health, there were 169 new Coronavirus cases aboard the Diamond Princess. To prevent the spread of the disease, the cruise line has partnered with the Japanese government. Princess Cruises also stated that Australia and Canada will repatriate any affected passengers.

The Diamond Princess was contacted by the flu and the medical staff were notified. A multidisciplinary team of health care experts and physicians was created to support the ship's crew and passengers. This team included representatives from the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Labour and Welfare as well as the Self-Defense Forces and Japanese Red Cross Society.

Cost of quarantine

A major Asian cruise ship was recently quarantined after three passengers contracted the coronavirus. Dream Cruises, an organization that travels to Asian countries, runs the ship. After a passenger contracted the virus, the Diamond Princess, another luxury vessel, was also quarantined. Princess Cruises agreed to the Japanese government's order for quarantine due to the outbreak. The crew on the ship didn’t follow standard procedures to prevent cross contamination from the virus. Also, they were unable use proper personal protective equipment to clean cabins.

Princess Cruises brought in a WHO-certified, award-winning company to manage the quarantine process. It will use 60 staff, including environmental health officers, nurses, doctors and operators, to keep watch on passengers and crew. These individuals will assist with meal service and recreational activities while providing daily health checks.

It is best to find out what the forecasts are before you book your cruise.
  5. Pack light - When packing for your cruise, limit yourself to only 10 items. No need to take too many clothes or shoes with you. You can instead pack all you need in small, carry-on-sized bags. It is a good idea to bring layers of clothing because you might not be able access the laundry facilities at your destination.
  6. Do your research before you buy tickets. Be sure to review their policies regarding pricing, the services they provide, as well and whether cancellation policies make sense.
  7. Do not miss these must see spots. Visit each port at minimum once. Every location has its own charm and culture so make sure you visit all of them.
